Battles That Changed the World. Following on from the first successful Battlefields Magazine Against All Odds this second edition Battles That Changed the World is about decisive battles that have altered the course of history. This time the focus is on Hastings 1066, Waterloo in 1815 and Stalingrad 1942-3. Commissioned by Key Publishing and authored by renowned military historian Robert Kershaw to produce this bookazine coving all aspects of mapping, both 2 & 3d. The design and layout is clean, fresh and undaunting. Designing and illustrating unique icons for the chapter intro’s allow the reader to follow and help the reader interested in the subject matter. This one-shot special publication looks at three battles from world history and takes a unique perspective, looking at the role of the men and women involved, tracing the battle, the build up and ultimate outcome, and visits the sites of battles to see what can be seen today with ‘Battlefield Detective’. The publication also features unique 3D animation from which stills have been taken to portray battle progression over a fixed timeframe. Released by Key Publishing.Battles That Changed the World, September 2012.

The winter issue of Eye magazine features a fantastic interview and section of spreads on Joost Grootens the Dutch designer. His atlas and map designs for the Dutch water line defence and others show a meticulous level of detail but in such clean and prescribed way. His use of limited colour and choice of paper stock for these atlases bring out the best of the design and the maps themselves. I really do find these maps and all of his other design and info graphics inspirational, there is such a sophistication I would love to be involved in a project such as theses! See a short film with him talking about some of his work here – View his own website – www.grootens.nl/2/10/11.html

None of them involve sharing a bottle of wine, eating bread and cheese on the banks of the Seine, or wandering arm in arm with your loved one. In fact, loved ones do not figure at all, this is a guide for the solo traveler and our suggestions are all best enjoyed on your own – although incurable romantics may wish to bring their partners too, we won’t kick up a fuss. Among the highlights: a taxidermist extraordinaire, mint tea at the Grand Mosque, found photographs at Images & Portraits, along with places to eat, swim, drink, buy vintage erotica and enjoy a solitary ice cream. In short, everything the intrepid visitor might require. The map is illustrated by Lord Dunsby. It is A3 (297x420mm) folded to A6 (105x148mm), and litho printed in England on recycled paper.
